This is a striking mural tribute by graphic artist Ganzeer and a team of volunteers to eighteen year old Islam Rafat Zinhoum who was run down by a security truck on Angry Friday 28 January 2011, the bloodiest day of the January uprising.

It was painted in March 2011 at the corner of a car park in Medan Falaki just three minutes walk east of Tahrir Square. The team took one whole day to prepare the stencils and another whole day and night to paint. Passers by contributed by bringing extra paint as recounted in this short Youtube documentary

The young man depicted was one of nearly a thousand who sacrificed their lives in the initial uprising,. A student, Islam was fond of saying "tomorrow will be better." Four years later his family and the families of all the other martyrs are still waiting for the murderers of their loved ones to be brought to justice.

A few days after I took this photo the mural was painted over with white paint but, determined not to let the censors win, Ganzeer (real name Mohamed Fahmy) and the team returned to repaint it again in May.

Unfortunately today Ganzeer is no longer able to provide Egyptians with an alternative narrative to the media propaganda of the current regime.

Despite President Sisi's recent assertion during a CNN interview that "Egypt enjoys unprecedented freedom of expression" the country's foremost street artist was forced to leave the country in May 2014 after he was denounced on the television programme "Al Raees wal Nas" (The President and the People) as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
