edfrom hence the 5th. of January last, bound for Jamaica : About12 Days after he left Sandy Hook, he met with a violent North-Wind, which obliged him to lay too ; and on the 21st o^ January,the Gale ceasing, he found himself close aboard the North Sideof Hispaniola, when a stark Calm ensued, and the Vessel wasdrove ashore by the Violence of the SurfF, close under a Cliff,about 15 Leagues to Leeward of Cape Francois ; the People withthe utmost Difficulty of their Lives, just escaped to Shore, andthe Vessel in a few Minutes was dashd all to Pieces. When theyfound themselves going ashore, they let go all their Anchors, andused all other Methods possible to save their Vessel, but havingso little Command of her, they found themselves obliged to sub-mit. Thus the famous Hester, who, while a Privateer, broughtmany Frenchmens Bones against their Wills into New York;was providentially obliged to leave her Bones on a French Coast.~N. Y.
