All along the avenue are saloons of more than doubt-ful character, and oyster-houses in which no decentperson ever sets foot. These are favorite resorts withthe street-walkers and their companions, and rallyingplaces for the ruffians that lend the girls their protec-tion and live upon the wretched earnings of thewomen.
