DescripciónNew Yorker punch bowl 02 - Viktor Schrenkengost (39517173152).jpg
Punch bowl on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.
This bowl was designed by Vicktor Schrenkengost (1906-2008) for the Cowan Pottery Studio (1912-1931) of Rocky River, Ohio. Schrenkengost was an industrial designer, teacher, sculptor, and artist whose influence ran very deep in American decorative arts and yet whose name remains obscure even to this day.
The bowl was commissioned in 1930 by Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to commemorate Franklin D. Roosevelt's second inauguration as governor of New York. It is titled "New Yorker", and sometimes referred to as "Jazz".
The punch bowl is molded earthenware, and features Art Deco designs intended to reflect the vibrancy of New York City jazz club nightlight. The glazing is in the sgraffito style, in which two successive layers of contrasting glaze are applied to unfired earthware. The outer layer is then scratched away to reveal the layer beneath.
