DescripciónPachnoda sinuata, Cetoniinae, wing mechanisms of dead specimens 2012 02 15 2740ss.jpg
English: Pachnoda sinuata is a large species of "fruit beetle" in Southern Africa. Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae. This shows the wing mechanisms of dead specimens. The beetles fly at great speed with elytra nearly shut and take off very smartly at need, snapping the posterior wings out like flick knives, barely lifting the elytra, as shown here. On settling they stow the wings almost as abruptly. One specimen with elytra removed. Two isolated wings, one partly folded.

The speed with which the species (and some other Cetoniinae) can deploy or stow their wings argues that they use a more sophisticated mechanism than species that open their elytra.
