From 15 - 23 August 1914, mortal combat took place in Dinant between French and German soldiers: there were over a thousand victims on each side and the fighting culminated in the burning of the town and the massacre of 674 civilians. Following this, the bodies of 58 French and 12 German soldiers were found at the bottom of this dead-end tunnel: the French were trapped there when the attack was launched on 15 August and were forced to fight hand-to-hand with a bayonet right down to the last man. The bodies of these 70 victims were cremated at the main entrance. The Germans had a monument erected over the ashes of the French and German soldiers during the First World War. |
