In this Centennialyear, the whole Catholic world is noticingwith joyous astonishment the marvelous ex-tent of Mother Setons work. Our parochialschool system, the surprise of the world andthe delight of the Church, inaugurated byher a century ago, when there was but oneArchbishop in this vast country, proves thatshe was chosen by God for an American workand one much in advance of her own time.Her academy at St. Josephs, Emmitsburg,sometimes given as third in the United States,was really the first opened by religious; forthe Ursuline Academy, begun a few yearsearlier, in New Orleans, La., then a Provinceof France, did not belong to the United States.The Foundress of the Visitations at George-town, had opened an academy, a few years Page Sixty-Six.

before Mother Seton began her school inBaltimore, but the Visitation Nuns were notapproved until 1816, while the Sisters ofCharity received Archbishop Carrolls appro-bation January 17, 1812. Before the Community at Emmitsburgaffiliated with the Daughters of Charity inFrance, there were foundations, and oftenseveral in one city, as follows: Albany,New York City, Buffalo, Brooklyn, Rochester,Syracuse, Troy, Utica, Baltimore, Emmits-burg, Frederick, Alexandria, Detroit, Boston,Donaldsonville, New Orleans, Wilmington,Del., Vincennes, Evansville, Ind., St. Louis,Cincinnati, Washington, D. C, Philadelphia,Richmond, Norfolk, Pittsburg, Natchez, Mo-bile, Milwaukee, Newark, N. J., Harrisburgh. In 1857, Bishop Bayley, of Newark, N. J.,nephew of Mother Seton, wishing to establisha diocesan community to follow the rules ofMother Seton, and desiring the training ofMother Margaret George, sent five postu-lants to Mount St. Vincent, Cedar Grove,Cincinnati.
