The Number of the Beast[3]​ es el tercer álbum de estudio de Iron Maiden. Editado el 29 de marzo de 1982. Su principal novedad, es el cambio del vocalista Paul Di'Anno, por Bruce Dickinson.

El álbum dio un gran salto en popularidad llegando alcanzar el primer puesto en las listas de ventas en el Reino Unido.

Éste álbum y el grupo fueron tachados de satanismo por la temática de algunas canciones; como la portada del álbum, (en la que se ve el icono Eddie the Head con una marioneta del Diablo, y al Diablo con una marioneta del ser humano).

La portada de este disco estaba pensada para el sencillo "Purgatory" del álbum Killers, pero cuando Derek Riggs la terminó vieron que era demasiado buena como para utilizarse en un sencillo.

Se trata de uno de los álbumes más renombrados de Iron Maiden pues podemos encontrar en él algunos de los temas más populares entre los seguidores del grupo, como "The Number of the Beast", "Run to the Hills", ó "Hallowed Be Thy Name",[4]​ canciones que aún hoy son frecuentes en sus conciertos.

"Total Eclipse" no aparecía en la edición original del álbum, pues el grupo tenía dudas entre esta canción y "Gangland" acerca de cual se incluiría finalmente en "The Number of the Beast". Finalmente se decantaron por "Gangland"", quedando "Total Eclipse" relegada al estatus de lado B. Años más tarde se arrepintieron de tal decisión, por lo que el tema ha sido añadido al álbum en ediciones posteriores.
