Markus Zusak, nacido en 1975 en Sydney, es un escritor australiano conocido internacionalmente por sus novelas de literatura infantil I Am The Messenger y La ladrona de libros entre otras obras.
Markus Zusak nació como Branko Cincovic, pero decidió cambiar su nombre a la edad de 19 años, cuando se mudó de su casa y comenzó su carrera de escritor.
En una entrevista para el Sydney Morning Herald, Zusak dijo que desde niño fue escuchando historias acerca de la Alemania nazi, el bombardeo de Múnich y del maltrato de los Judíos. Estas historias le inspiró a escribir el libro de La ladrona de libros.
