La ciudad estado de Singapur tiene más de 4.300 edificios altos completados, la mayoría de los cuales están situados en Downtown Core.[1]​ En la ciudad hay 49 rascacielos de altura superior a 140 metros (459 pies). Tres edificios comparten el título de edificio más alto de Singapur: United Overseas Bank Plaza One, Republic Plaza y Overseas Union Bank Centre.[2]​ Las tres torres, que también comparten el título de 91.er edificio más alto del mundo, tienen una altura de 280 m (919 pies) cada uno.[3]​[4]​[5]​ Hay una restricción de altura de 280 metros (919 pies) para estructuras situadas en el distrito financiero de Singapur por la proximidad de la Base Aérea Paya Lebar.[3]​[6]​

La historia de los rascacielos de Singapur comenzó con la finalización en 1939 de Cathay Building, con 17 plantas.[7]​ El inmueble, de 70 metros (230 pies) de altura, se convirtió en el edificio más alto del Sureste de Asia y fue sustituido en 1954 por Asia Insurance Building, de 87 metros (285 pies) de altura, que retuvo el título en Singapur hasta que fue completado Shaw Centre con 100 m (328 pies) de altura en 1958.[8]​[9]​ Singapur atravesó un gran boom de edificios en las décadas de 1970 y 1980 que resultó de la rápida industrialización de la ciudad. Durante este tiempo, Overseas Union Bank Centre se convirtió en el edificio más alto de la ciudad estado; la estructura de 280 m (919 pies) fue también el edificio más alto del mundo fuera de América del Norte desde su finalización en 1986 hasta 1989, cuando se completó Bank of China Tower en Hong Kong.[3]​[10]​ El boom de rascacielos continuó durante las décadas de 1990 y 2000, con 30 edificios de altura superior a 140 m (459 pies) construidos desde 1990 hasta 2008.

Desde el año 2000 ha habido un incremento notable en el número de rascacielos en construcción en la ciudad, particularmente en el distrito Marina Bay. Un proyecto en construcción en Marina Centre es Marina Bay Financial Centre, que incluye dos torres de oficinas y uin rascacielos residencial de 227 m (745 pies) de altura.[11]​ La finalización del proyecto está planificada para 2010. También hay varios nuevos proyectos en el centro de compras de la ciudad, Orchard Road. The Orchard Residences es una torre de 43 plantas y 245 m (804 pies) de altura en construcción junto a ION Orchard, un futuro centro comercial.[12]​ Además, se ha iniciado en Raffles place la construcción de Ocean Financial Centre, un rascacielos planeado de 43 plantas y 218 m (715 pies) de altura.[13]​
