Lanzamiento y recepción[editar]

Universal Music Japan lanzó «Lights» en varios países el 3 de julio de 2019 como el primer sencillo del cuarto álbum en japonés de BTS Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~, tanto en los formatos para descarga digital como streaming.[1]​[2]​ La empresa también publicó la canción como sencillo en CD en Japón el 5 de julio de 2019 en tres ediciones limitadas diferentes: la versión A, que tenía un DVD con los videos musicales de «Lights» y «Idol»; la B, que tenía un DVD con el detrás de escenas del rodaje de «Lights» y el «Making of Album Jacket Photos»; y la C, que tenía un libro de fotografías de 36 páginas.[3]​[4]​ Las cuatro contienen «Lights» y «Boy with Luv» como una sencillo doble lado A y el tema «Idol» como lado B.

«Lights» recibió reseñas favorables por parte de los críticos musicales. Tamar Herman de Billboard elogió las «voces dulces de BTS y los versos de rap evocativos», así como el contenido lírico, y mencionó que es una canción «inspiradora» con la habilidad de «alegrarle el día a cualquiera».[5]​ Asimismo, Sara Delgado de Teen Vogue compartió una opinión similar. 

deeming the band's vocal delivery as "awe-inspiring."[6]​ In his review for Idolator, Mike Nied regarded the song as a "soaring anthem" which he felt complemented the "soft and dreamy" accompanying visuals.[7]​ At the 2020 Japan Gold Disc Awards, the single album "Lights / Boy with Luv" received the Best 5 Singles award, while the song "Lights" was awarded the Song of the Year by Download (Asia).[8]​

Video musical y promoción[editar]

The music video for "Lights" was uploaded to Universal Music Japan's official YouTube channel on July 2, 2019; it was preceded by a teaser released via the same platform on June 20.[9]​ The visual is almost five-minutes long and opens in an empty movie theatre, where the opening title credits of a film titled "Lights" begin rolling on screen. In the following scene, Jungkook enters the theatre and sits down to watch the film.[10]​ The video then cuts to show the other six members around the venue, engaged in different "mundane" activities.[9]​[11]​ The visual is interspersed with scenes that show the band heading to an ATM, buying popcorn, discovering secret passageways, and running through a car park.[11]​[12]​[13]​ In some of the scenes, the members are seen staring directly into the camera.[9]​ Throughout the video, the band continue to watch the film, which features themselves, on screen. The visual explores the "concept of time and space," with scenes in which time has frozen and objects are seen floating around the cinema.[12]​[10]​ As the clip progresses, the members are drawn towards each other while they interact and share effusive moments together.[10]​ At one point, the projector beam scatters into tiny particles of light that turn into glowing orbs reminiscent of stars.[9]​[10]​ Suga appears amongst them in the car park, rapping while while the particles float around him.[9]​ The rest of the band gaze up at the glowing lights from below while lying on a basketball court.[9]​[10]​ The clip ends with the song's title displayed against the backdrop of light emanating from the movie projector. In her review for CelebMix, Ellie Nicholas called the music video "simplistic yet so beautiful" that it "matches the tone of the song perfectly."[14]​ Lake Schatz of Consequence of Sound regarded the visual as "magical" and "dreamlike."[15]​ Puah Ziwei from NME echoed similar sentiments, labeling the clip as "stunning" and "dreamy."[12]​

On November 23 and 24, 2019, BTS performed "Lights" live for the first time as part of their fifth Japanese fan-meeting concert- Magicshop, at the Zozo Marine Stadium, Chiba, Japan. The band again performed the song on December 14 and 15 of the same year, at the Kyocera Dome Osaka in Osaka, Japan.[16]​[17]​[18]​
