Teaching Financial Translation at a university level (NYU)

After 10 years living in New York, I moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I worked as a correspondent for Dow Jones Newswires, and later headed the Brazil content operations of Patagon, an online financial company that dealt with market news and personal finance throughout Latin America. My duties at Patagon included:

Translating all combinations of English, Spanish & Portuguese Editing original news stories and translations, Writing original articles and columns on markets, business and personal finance that would appeal to a Brazilian or a general Latin American audience (in English and Spanish, which I translated into Portuguese).

My free-lance experience is heavily focused on business and legal work, with a growing practice related to government and international organizations (OAS, IADB, WTO, etc), dealing with issues such as:

· Money-laundering · International trade · Public-health initiatives (tobacco, AIDS, drugs)

My experience in financial journalism has given me a leg up in truly understanding business and its language. It has also provided me with strong research skills, and with hundreds of industry contacts to turn to when researching a term.

Other relevant experience: Court-interpreting, 2 years' practice (1992-93) in several New Jersey courts, after passing the test of the NJ Administrative Office of the Courts in sight, consecutive, and simultaneous interpreting.

Beyond my web-based research of original copy of contracts, business literature, etc., in order to keep up with the language of business and with good writing in general, I am subscribed to (and regularly read)

The Wall Street Journal The Economist The New Yorker The New York Times
