About Native Spirit

The Native Spirit Film Festival is an international non-profit festival, film festival, which provides a platform for indigenous film makers and artists from around the globe to present their work. The festival hosts screenings, performances, panel discussions and cultural events. The festival is held annually since 2007 and is hosted by SOAS University of London.

History

The Native Spirit Festival is hosted by its likely named foundation, which was founded by the Mapuche artist and filmmaker Freddy Trequil. The festival highlight the main missions of the foundation: to reveal the realities of indigenous peoples, and to support education amongst their communities. Moreover, the festival’s main aim is to create a space for self-representation of indigenous people, through which it believes to contribute to the preservation of First Nations cultural heritages.

Mandate

Native Spirit focuses on promotes education and the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples. Moreover, the Native Spirit Film Festival’s primary aim is the decolonization of the film medium, in which it is unique in its approach. Moreover, the festival do not receive funding from sponsors and organizations which have conflicted interests in indigenous land and human rights issues, in order to maintain the integrity of its aims, and works with volunteers only.
