En la división convencional de continentes, de origen europeo, Asia y Europa aparecen como dos entidades diferentes por razones culturales e históricas. Relieve

Las de Pamir y Tibet estan situadas a 3.600 m y 5.000 m respectivamente, por lo que se conocen como el techo del mundo. Clima
Asia presenta una gran diversidad climática y de vegetación: desde los secos paisajes desérticos a la exuberante selva tropical, dado que su extensión y características geográficas presentan muchos tipos de climas muy variados.
Climas cálidos
Los principales tipos de clima cálido en Asia son: ecuatorial, tropical húmedo, tropical seco y desértico. Los dos primeros, caracterizados por sus abundantes precipitaciones, se extienden por todo el sudeste asiático, tanto en su parte continental por la península de Indostán e Indochina, como en la insular por los archipiélagos de Indonesia y Filipinas.

Climas templados
Los principales tipos de clima templado de Asia son el continental, el mediterráneo y parecidos.
El clima continental tiene inviernos muy fríos y secos, y veranos templados y con mayores precipitaciones. Se da en la región siberiana.
El clima mediterráneo, de precipitaciones irregulares y con temperaturas suaves en invierno y cálidas en verano, se extiende por las costas de la península de Anatolia, Siria y Palestina.
Variedades similares al tipo de clima mediterráneo, pero con precipitaciones mucho más abundantes en los meses de verano, se dan en la zona costera de China, Corea del Sur y Japón.
Climas fríos
Los principales tipos de clima frío de Asia son el desértico, propio de las altas mesetas interiores, y el polar, que se da en el extremo septentrional del continente. Ambos tienen precipitaciones escasas y temperaturas muy frías. Otro tipo de clima frío es el de alta montaña que se da en las zonas más elevadas, como las cumbres del Himalaya.

En julio de 1997, la moneda tailandesa (el baht) se devaluó, contradiciendo las repetidas declaraciones de las autoridades gubernamentales de que eso no ocurriría. En cuestión de días, las monedas de Indonesia, Filipinas y Malasia fueron fuertemente atacadas y comenzaron a derrumbarse. Para fines de octubre, el won de Corea del Sur se colapsó y la crisis se generalizo en el continente asiático.
Puede sonar paradójico que apenas unos cuantos meses antes de las crisis estas economías eran vistas como sólidas y estables, con muy buen futuro económico. Incluso, días antes de las crisis, los analistas financieros y económicos parecían no tener la mínima noción de lo que pasaría. El hecho de que ambas economías formaran parte del grupo de las economías más vigiladas por la comunidad financiera internacional hace a estas dos características todavía más insólitas.
El hecho es que la mayoría de las economías de Asia oriental sufrió una severa recesión en 1998. El PIB se desplomo 14% en Indonesia, 9% en Tailandia, 7% en Malasia, 6% en Corea, 5% en Hong Kong y 3% en Japón. ¿Cómo pudo sufrir un colapso tan repentino y grave una región que habla tenido tanto éxito? La respuesta es que Asia vivió una aguda crisis financiera.
Demografía
La población en el continente asiático es cercana a los 4 mil millones de habitantes, concentrándose en la costa del mar de la China y en la península indostànica, en regiones que llegan a alcanzar densidades de mil habitantes por kilómetro cuadrado. Aunque en los últimos lustros su crecimiento ha disminuido, aun en países del medio oriente se mantienen importantes tasas de crecimiento demográfico, en general cerca del 70% de los nacimientos en el mundo se producen en Asia de manera que el envejecimiento no es tan progresivo. Con una mayoría poblacional cuya edad es inferior a 30 años en la que los ancianos son un porcentaje inferior.
Características de la población
La población asiática es de diferentes características como los de piel amarilla blanquecina y de ojos oblicuos, que comprende el Lejano Oriente desde la Siberia, China, Vietnam, la península de Corea, las islas de Taiwán, Japón, el archipiélago malayo y filipino. Dentro de ese grupo étnico destacan los indígenas como los malayos, de piel morena u oscura que se dividen en diferentes ramas, ya que de ellos descienden los tagalos, visayos, iloacanes, polinesios, melanesios, micronesios, etc. Las etnias de fenotipo blanco comprenden el Medio y Próximo Oriente. Entre ellos destacan los árabes, armenios, judíos, persas, hindúes, asirios, turcos, rusos etc.). Existen también algunas etnias de tipo negroide y migrantes de diferentes países europeos.
Población por sexo o genero
En la mayor parte de los países del continente asiático tanto del Lejano Oriente como Oriente Medio, predominan las personas de sexo masculino excepto en países como Japón, Vietnam, Laos, Camboya, Tailandia, Birmania, Líbano, Israel, Rusia, Kazajistán, Armenia, Sri Lanka y entre otros, donde predominan las personas de sexo femenino. Si bien en países como Israel y Japón, las personas de sexo masculino inferior a los 65 años de edad son mayoritarios en cambio en Filipinas las mujeres entre los 15 a 64 y 65 años de edad para adelante son mayoría. En Rusia el alto número de mujeres que tiene se debe a causa de las guerras que atravesó el país, ya que los varones han ido disminuyendo como en otros países principalmente de la Europa Oriental. Como los demás países europeos y asiáticos.
Lenguas
Las lenguas que se hablan en el continente asiático son numerosas. Entre ellas la más hablada es el chino o mandarín, seguidos del hindu, el chino cantonés, el urdu, el árabe, entre otras destacamos como lenguas oficiales y nativas el japonés, el bahasa indonesio, el coreano, turco, hebreo, persa, birmano, tailandés, tagalo, ruso, armenio, tibetano, etc. Debido a la colonización europea en diferentes naciones asiáticas, algunos idiomas europeos son también de uso habitual. Por ejemplo el inglés es utilizado como lengua asociada y comercial en la India, Malasia, Filipinas, Singapur, Birmania, Sri Lanka, Pakistán, Líbano, Israel, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, etc. El francés se usa en las naciones de la península de Indochina, parte de la India y el Líbano. La lengua española en forma minoritaria en el continente asiático, es hablada por minorías en las Filipinas y en las comunidades sefardíes de Oriente Próximo, principalmente en las naciones pertenecientes a la región de Israel y zonas de Turquía. También se habla minoritariamente en las ciudades taiwanesas de Ilan, Keelung y Tamsui. Además del español, en esta Región Oriental ha surgido una lengua criolla conocida como chabacano, que es hablado en determinados sectores de las Filipinas así también al norte de Sabah en Malasia y la ciudad de Ternate en Indonesia, todas ellas también antiguamente posesiones españolas. El griego es hablado en la isla de Chipre junto con el turco, y el portugués en algunos sectores de la India y China como (Dadra y Nagar Haveli, Damán y Diu y Goa) y (Macau).
Religión
Asia es un continente de gran riqueza espiritual y de diametral importancia religiosa ya que las religiones más practicadas del mundo surgieron en Asia, siendo cuna de las cinco grandes religiones mundiales; el judaísmo, el cristianismo, el islamismo, el budismo y el hinduismo. Debido a esto, países asiáticos como Israel (lugar sagrado para judíos, cristianos y musulmanes), Arabia Saudí (donde se encuentran dos de las tres ciudades santas de los musulmanes) e India (donde se encuentran los lugares santos de hindúes y budistas), reciben millones de peregrinos de todo el mundo.
Otras importantes religiones surgidas en Asia son el bahaísmo (Irán), el confucianismo (China), el jainismo (India), el sijismo (India), el sintoísmo (Japón), el taoísmo (China) y el zoroastrismo (Irán).
Entre diferentes pueblos asiáticos también se practica el animismo y el chamanismo, desde los segudiores del culto Bön en Tíbet, y la religión tradicional china, hasta las creencias animistas de diferentes tribus indígenas de todo el continente asiático.
La religión mayoritaria de Asia es el budismo, practicado principalmente en el Norte y Sudeste Asiático (abarcando desde el norte de India y el Himalaya hasta Japón), aunque en muchos países es practicado de forma sincrética al lado de otra religión nacional (taoísmo, confucianismo y religión tradicional china en China por ejemplo, shinto en Japón, etc.).
De cerca le sigue el Islam predominante en el Medio Oriente y el Asia Central (desde la península del Sinaí hasta Pakistán) más Malasia e Indonesia. El hinduismo es otra de las grandes religiones de Asia aunque más geográficamente concentrada, es mayoritario sólo en India y Nepal, pero con minorías en muchos países asiáticos.
El judaísmo es mayoritario en Israel (único país donde es mayoría en el mundo), y el cristianismo es mayoritario sólo en Filipinas, pero tiene importantes minorías en toda Asia.
A diferencia de otros continentes, al religión en Asia es de gran importancia y en muchos países es vista como parte de la identidad étnica, lo que ha motivado más de un conflicto étnico, como lo es el conflicto árabe-israelí, el enfrentamiento entre hindúes y musulmanes en India, Pakistán y Bangladesh, entre hindúes y budistas en Sri Lanka, entre musulmanes y budistas en Indonesia, entre musulmanes y cristianos en Líbano y entre hindúes y sikhs en India.
Historia
Mientras que África es considerada generalmente como el lugar de nacimiento de la humanidad, se cree que Asia junto con Europa, fue la cuna de la civilización, aunque ésta no fue única y uniforme: la gran extensión del continente asiático se hizo casi inevitable que surgieran varias culturas de manera independiente. El siguiente apartado intenta mostrar las interacciones, colisiones y sucesiones de estas civilizaciones desde una perspectiva continental. Sobre las regiones mencionadas, en las secciones de historia de los relativos a los distintos países asiáticos encontramos la parte cultural de Asia Menor, Asiria, Babilonia, la Civilización del valle del Indo, Oriente Próximo, Persia Siberia y Sumer. Además podemos destacar a las antiguas civilizaciones que surgieron, como en Mesopotamia, las civilizaciones indias, los orígenes de la civilización china.
Los principales reinos más antiguos en la interacción cultural como el gran emperador de Ciro II el Grande, que unificó a los pueblos de origen iraní en el Reino de Persia. Después la creación del Imperio Persa Aqueménida (550-330 a. C. aproximadamente), que extendió la cultura persa desde el Mar Mediterráneo hasta el Río Indo. La expansión india, la difusión de la civilización china, el dominio musulmán (conocido como el auge y expansión del islam) y mongol, la influencia china y mongola. Además los primeros inicios del dominio colonial de las grandes potencias europeas, como la exploración y colonización realizadas primeramente por España y Portugal, como la llegada de Fernando de Magallanes en 1521 quien descubrió la parte oriental seguido después por Juan Sebastián Elcano, más tarde colonizadas por Francia, Gran Bretaña, Países Bajos y Rusia. Hasta llegar a la independencia de los países colonizados de sus antiguas metropólis, como las respuestas al imperialismo, el mantenimiento de la independencia, independencia y conflictos, la intensificación del nacionalismo, la confrontación ideológica y la expansión económica.
Circunstancias históricas y humanas
Las circunstancias históricas y humanas han marcado la verdadera división entre el Asia Occidental desde la India hacia el oeste y el Asia Oriental conocida como el Lejano Oriente desde la India hacia el este. Además existen otras denominaciones que también por circunstancias históricas, es poco conocida en ciertos ámbitos, por ejemplo cuando se refiere a términos más conocidos en dichos continentes como Europa Latina o América Latina, Europa Anglosajona o América Anglosajona. A continuación estas son algunas de las siguientes denominaciones, que se destacan también en el continente asiático:
Asia Latina
El término de Asia Latina en el continente, se denominaba anteriormente a la provincia de Roma a la región Occidental de Anatolia o Asia Menor (actual Turquía), durante el Imperio Romano. Debido al coloniaje europeo en ciertos países se los conoce aquellos que fueron conquistados y colonizados por naciones latinas; en este caso por Francia, Portugal y España. También donde ciertas minorías en determinadas poblaciones tienen las lenguas romances, como idioma materno (francés, portugués y español).
Actualmente, la expresión de Asia Latina, fue utilizado por las diversas universidades francesas como la de Pierre Rousset[1] para designar a las antiguas colonias que pertenecieron a Francia en Asia como Camboya, Laos y Vietnam. La utilización de la expresión también esta designada para definir a las Filipinas y Timor Oriental. El caso de Líbano, también estaría incluida bajo este término ya que el francés es la segunda lengua oficial del país, compartido con el árabe el primer idioma oficial. El caso de Macao en China, también puede ser considerado parte de Asia Latina, ya que el portugués es la segunda lengua oficial junto con el chino o mandarín tradicional, además las calles del tráfico vehicular están escritas en dos idiomas, uno de ellos el portugués y el otro en chino, además algunos medios de comunicación como las radioemisoras también transmiten y difunden en lengua portuguesa. Además esta Región administrativa especial, ha solicitado formar parte de la Comunidad de Países de Lengua Portuguesa, lo cual solo dependerá del gobierno chino. También se incluiría la ciudad china de Tianjin, que fue una base militar compartida entre Bélgica e Italia y la ciudad japonesa de Nagasaki, fundada por los portugueses en 1500 y compartida con los españoles.
El sentido más estricto y amplio del término, aunque usado minoritariamente, designa algunos países o territorios de donde alguna de las lenguas romances sea lengua oficial o no. De acuerdo con esta definición, «Asia Latina» incluye a las antiguas colonias del hemisferio donde se hable francés por minorías de la población, como Pondichery en India; la provincia de Guangdong en China. Donde se hable español en las ciudades de Ilan, Keelung y Tamsui en Taiwán; además la región de Sabah en Malaysia, que formo parte de la Capitanía General de las Filipinas (1565: 1898) y las ciudades de Ternate y Tidore, donde se habla un dialecto derivado del criollo español. Donde se hable portugués como las regiones de Dadra y Nagar Haveli, Damán y Diu y Goa en India, este último que al igual que Macao también solicitó formar parte de la Comunidad de Países de Lengua Portuguesa que solo dependerá del gobierno hindú. Además la lengua española llegó a Taiwan en el año 1626 hasta 1642, cuando los colonos españoles se instalaron en el norte del país, antes de la ocupación holandesa, conocido como la Gobernación española de Taiwán. Construyeron los famosos castillos o fortalezas como la de San Salvador (en Keelung), Santo Domingo (en Tamsui), así como escuelas e iglesias para evangelizar la zona. Algunos taiwaneses, aunque pocos, aprendieron a leer en castellano. Similar a la de Filipinas, también en este país se promueve la enseñanza del español.
Dos países del continente han reconocido la cultura latina, uno de ellos son Filipinas y Timor Oriental, forman parte de la Unión Latina. El primero forma parte de la Hispanidad y el segundo miembro de la Comunidad de Países de Lengua Portuguesa. Además también estos dos países han solicitado participar en la Cumbre Iberoamericana desde 2001, sin que se haya concretado hasta la fecha.
En Timor Oriental, donde la mayoría de la población habla el Tetun, es una lengua indígena con diferentes palabras derivadas del portugués y el malayo, bien acuñadas como en algunas de las gramáticas. La tradición de la lengua portuguesa en el país se remonta a 400 años, a partir del momento en que los primeros exploradores portugueses se instalarón en la isla. Como consecuancia el portugués tiene estatuo oficial en el país. Recientemente el ex-primer ministro de Timor Oriental, Mari Alkatiri, ha utilizado la expresión de Asia latina para referirse a la única cultura en el país: "O primeiro-ministro convidou a visitar executivos para explorar o Timor-Leste e à experiência única cultural da Ásia Latina que pode ser encontrada aquí".[2]
Las Filipinas fueron conquistadas y gobernadas por España durante tres siglos o casi 400 años, después de ser cedida a los Estados Unidos en 1898 en la Guerra Hispano-Estadounidense y el Tratado de París, existen importantes poblaciones que hablan y conservan el español como lengua materna. Varios dialectos procedentes del criollo español, son habladas en las Filipinas incluso acuñadas en el tagalo y otras autóctonas, conocidos como Chabacano.
Estos son los siguientes:
Las Filipinas son consideradas también parte de Asia Latina, en ciertos círculos académicos, como por la Iglesia Católica y algunas ONGs [3] [4] .[5] Debido a la influencia estadounidense, las Filipinas ha utilizado hasta la fecha parte de la cultura Latina, como una marca comercial, para diferenciarse de sus ciudades y regiones de cualquier otras ciudades y regiones asiáticas. El caso representativo de Zamboanga, fue declarado bajo el título de Ciudad Latina da Asia.[6][7]
Camboya, Laos y Vietnam, tienen también algo de influencia de cultura francofona debido a la colonización francesa. Aunque el francés es utilizado como lengua comercial, ya sea en el turísmo o la gastronomía.
Países de Asia miembros de la Mancomunidad Británica de Naciones
Se denominan a los países que fueron conquistados y colonizadas por el Reino Unido o Gran Bretaña. Aunque el inglés, también se utiliza con o sin estatuto oficial en el comercio, la administración y el turísmo, compartido junto con los idiomas oficiales y nativos en cada uno de los países correspondientes. Por circunstancias históricas son miembros de la Mancomunidad Británica de Naciones, países como Bangladesh, Brunéi, India, Malasia, Maldivas, Pakistán, Singapur y Sri Lanka, incluyendo también Hong Kong en China, que fue una colonia británica y algunas de las dependencias pertenecientes al Reino Unido. Además hay otros países que también utilizan el inglés como lengua administrativo o comercial, un ejemplo de ello es Filipinas que tiene al inglés como segunda lengua oficial después del tagalo primer idioma oficial, pero bajo esta denominación no se considera debido a que está más ligado a la Hispanidad. A pesar después de haber sido una colonia española (1521: 1898), después pasó a ser una colonia de los Estados Unidos hasta 1946.
Cine
En Asia han destacado muchas películas, sobre todo en el Lejano Oriente de producciones chinas y japonesas, Muchas de ellas no todas, relacionadas con las artes marciales, y muchas otras producciones de cine con contenidos muy buenos como, romance, comedia, terror, etc. El actor más destacado es Bruce lee, seguido de Pat Morita, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Tony Jaa y Monsour del Rosario, entre otros. Entre los directores más reconocidos del continente fue el japonés Akira Kurosawa. O como la ya famosa "Slumdog Millonaire", que ha conseguido records en las taquillas.
Deportes
En el continente se practican diferentes estilos deportivos, aunque en el Lejano Oriente, los más populares son las artes marciales como el Judo, el Karate, el Aikidō, el Ninjutsu, el Kenpo y entre otros originarios de Japón. El Taichi, el Kung Fu, el Choy Lee Fut, el Shaolin y entre otros originarios de la China. El Taekwondo, el Hapkido, el Taekkyon, el Tangsudo, entre otros en Corea. El Eskrima, el Kali filipino y otros son originarios de Filipinas. Además también en el continente se han hecho famosos otros deportes como el Fútbol, Baloncesto, Natación, Esgrima, la Gimnasia, Tenis, Voleibol, etc... Ciertos países han destacado en diferentes torneos a nivel continental, como los Juegos Asiáticos a partir de 1951 en diferentes países del continente. Los países miembros pertenecientes a diferentes organizaciones internacionales, destacaron también como en los Juegos de la Mancomunidad, los Juegos de la Francofonía y por casualidad Filipinas y Timor Oriental, en uno de los eventos deportivos de los Juegos Iberoamericanos. Japón fue el primer país del continente en inaugurar los Juegos Olímpicos como Tokio 1964, Corea del Sur en Seúl 1988 y China en Beijing 2008. Además por primera vez dos países juntos, Japón y Corea del Sur, fueron los anfritiones de inaugurar la Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2002. Yao Ming es el mejor deportista de la historia china juega en la NBA en los huston rockets, también Ji Sung Park uno de los mejores futbolistas surcoreano que juega en el Manchester United.
